Ingredients:

  • 1 cup milk (whole milk, skim milk, or a dairy-free alternative like almond or soy milk)
  • 2-3 green cardamom pods, lightly crushed (you can also use ground cardamom, about 1/4 teaspoon)
  • 1-2 teaspoons sugar or honey (adjust to taste)
  • A small pinch of saffron strands (optional, for flavor and color)
  • A few chopped nuts (such as almonds or cashews) for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Cardamom:

  • If using cardamom pods, lightly crush them to release the aromatic seeds. You can do this by pressing the pods with the flat side of a knife. Alternatively, you can use ground cardamom.

2. Heat the Milk:

  • Pour the milk into a small saucepan and place it over low to medium heat.

3. Infuse with Cardamom:

  • Add the crushed cardamom pods or ground cardamom to the milk as it warms up.
  • If desired, you can also add a pinch of saffron strands to enhance the flavor and color.

4. Simmer Gently:

  • Allow the milk to come to a gentle simmer, stirring occasionally to prevent it from sticking to the bottom of the saucepan.

5. Sweeten to Taste:

  • When the milk is almost simmering, add sugar or honey, adjusting the sweetness to your liking. Stir to dissolve the sweetener.

6. Strain and Serve:

  • Once the milk has simmered for a few minutes and has absorbed the cardamom's flavor, remove it from the heat.
  • Strain the cardamom pods (if used) and any saffron strands from the milk. This step is optional if you enjoy the visual and textural presence of cardamom in your milk.
  • Pour the cardamom-infused milk into a cup or serving glass.

7. Garnish (Optional):

  • You can garnish your cardamom milk with a few chopped nuts, such as almonds or cashews, for added texture and flavor.

8. Enjoy:

  • Serve your warm and aromatic cardamom milk immediately. Sip and savor the soothing flavor and aroma.

Cardamom milk is a delightful and comforting drink, especially when served warm. The subtle spiciness of cardamom pairs well with the sweetness of sugar or honey, creating a balance of flavors. It's perfect for a relaxing evening or to help promote a peaceful night's sleep.
