Defining American Single Malt Whiskey: Flexibility and Recognition

The booming trend of American single malt whiskey, challenging traditional Scottish whiskey making, is set to gain official recognition with the Tax and Trade Bureau preparing to unveil a new spirit category definition. This marks a significant departure from Scotland's strict rules, requiring production at one distillery and using 100 percent malted barley. Unlike Scotch, the proposed American definition does not mandate the use of a pot still for distillation or a minimum three-year aging period, allowing for greater flexibility in production methods. With over 200 distilleries now crafting American single malt whiskey, the new definition acknowledges its mainstream status, surpassing Scotland in distillery numbers. Co-founder Steve Hawley emphasizes the necessity of this step to accommodate the industry's critical mass in the United States.
